The gap is between the register and the floor
Your register says what you own. The decommissioning run says what left. Reconciling those two is where the days go, and a ghost asset is an unresolved line in both.
- A serial typed at the end of a shift is a serial that may not match the register.
- An asset recorded as destroyed that is still on a shelf is the finding nobody wants.
- The reverse — destroyed but still shown as live — is worse, and harder to notice.
Your auditor is internal, and that changes the evidence
An ITAD operator is proving something to a customer. You are proving it to your own risk function, your regulator, or whoever signs the certification you hold.
The test is the same either way. One asset, chosen at random, months later: what happened to it, when, and who confirmed. What differs is that nobody is going to accept "our vendor says so" on your behalf.
Nothing has to leave the floor
This matters more here than anywhere else on this site. Plenty of data centre policies will not allow images of racked or de-racked hardware onto a third party's infrastructure, and a policy is not a negotiation.
- The secure tablet, the fixed mount and the on-shredder unit have no connectivity at all.
- Nothing reaches us. We have no access to what they capture.
- The record is exported by your operator, deliberately, over a cable.
The mobile app is different — it is backed by a cloud service and we say so plainly on its own page and in our privacy notice. If your policy rules that out, the offline deployments exist for exactly that reason.
It fits whatever your process already is
Whether decommissioning happens at a bench, in a cage, or at a shredder on site, the capture goes where the asset already is rather than adding a station it has to travel to.
